Description
The background: in the early 30s' of the last century, the Soviets were in need of a powerful freight locomotive. So they placed an order with an American locomotive design bureau for drawings and the technology. Upon receiving the documents, Soviet engineers realized that their production and engineering capacities could not meet American standards, so they modified the design documents in six months (crash work ordered by the Party), and delivered them for pilot production. The locomotive was commissioned in 1932 and named FD after Felix Dzerzhinsky, the first Chairman of the Cheka OGPU (the Extraordinary Commission of the Special State Political Directorate). This locomotive was the main freight one for 30 years up to the early 60s' when it was replaced with diesel and electric locomotives. The one on the photo is a monument to railway workers, and stands not far away from the central Yuzhny Railway Station.
